Our Lymphatic System Affects our Hormones
Did you know that our lymphatic system is a major player in our immune health? What is the lymphatic system you may wonder? It is found throughout the body and consists of a large network of lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes (those are those hard lumps you feel in your neck when you are sick), lymphoid organs, lymphatic tissue and the clear fluid called lymph. This system is the largest circulatory system in our bodies and works very closely with the circulatory system that pumps our blood.
Not only does it take out the trash for our bodies but it also helps deliver properly digested fats and proteins to all the cells. The lymphatic system also assists in the control of healthy fluid levels.
The 'Thyroid Lymph Connection' explains that in Ayurveda congested lymph nodes in the neck that drain the thyroid can lead to slow thyroid function. In fact, "as far back as 1988, researchers knew that 90% of hypothyroid cases were due to an autoimmune concern that was originally described as a lymphatic congestive condition of the neck and thyroid."
Our lymphatic system also impacts our hormones, the article below explains how our lymphatic system plays a role in the delivery of our hormones in particular progesterone. The lymphatic system is more attracted to progesterone than oestrogen. Too much oestrogen can stop the absorption of thyroid hormone at its receptor sites in the body resulting in symptoms of an underactive thyroid. It can damage the thyroid gland, and is linked to PCOS so you can see that it is important that we keep a free-flowing lymphatic system to help maintain this hormonal balance in the body.
